Contractual Position
Education Consultant
The Education Consultant will provide high-quality educational support to Teen HYPE
participants, focusing on academic enrichment in math, science, and reading. This role combines one-on-one and small group homework assistance with the development and facilitation of engaging educational programming that aligns with Teen HYPE’s youth-centered philosophy and theatrical arts methodology.

- Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday | 4 hours per day (4-8p) during the school year
- Contract Duration: 36 weeks per year
- Location: Detroit, MI
Key Responsibilities
Academic Support & Homework Assistance (40%)
- Provide individualized and small group homework help to students in grades 8-12
- Support students with math, science, and reading assignments
- Identify learning gaps and provide targeted interventions
- Create a supportive, judgment-free learning environment
- Track student progress and communicate updates to Program Manager
- Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities
Curriculum Development (30%)
- Design and develop INNOVATIVE engaging lesson plans in math, science, and reading
- Align curriculum with Michigan state standards and Teen HYPE’s mission
- Incorporate creative and interactive elements into educational content
- Integrate theatrical arts methodology where appropriate
- Maintain organized records of all lesson plans and materials
Educational Programming (25%)
- Facilitate experiential workshops and group learning sessions
- Lead math, science, and reading enrichment activities
- Create hands-on, experiential learning opportunities
- Foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Encourage youth voice and leadership in educational settings
- Adapt programming based on student feedback and engagement
Collaboration & Communication (5%)
- Collaborate with Teen HYPE staff to support holistic youth development
- Communicate regularly with Program Manager about student progress
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and planning sessions
- Maintain professional relationships with students, families, and staff
- Contribute to program evaluation and continuous improvement efforts
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Math, Science, English, or related field • Michigan teaching certification preferred but not required
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with youth ages 13-18
- Demonstrated experience in tutoring or educational support
- Experience developing lesson plans and educational curriculum
- Experience working with diverse, urban youth populations
Skills & Competencies
- Strong content knowledge in math, science, and reading
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to explain complex concepts in accessible ways
- Patient, encouraging, and supportive teaching style
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency with educational technology and online learning platforms
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Cultural competency and commitment to equity in education
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in Education or related field
- Experience with project-based or experiential learning approaches
- Familiarity with arts-integrated education methods
- Experience working with nonprofit youth-serving organizations
- Knowledge of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Hourly Rate: $35 per hour (based on experience and qualifications) Contract Details:
- 36-week contract (aligns with academic year and)
- 3 days per week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
- 4 hours per day
- Total: 432 hours per contract year
