Introducing Our ‘Ready for the World’ Annual Fund Campaign!
This year we ask for your financial support of our Peer Education program.
Teen HYPE Peer Educators are a remarkable and diverse group of teens dedicated to creating a positive future for themselves and for Detroit. More than 600 youths have participated since 2004. They dedicate themselves to leadership development, risk avoidance, effective communication, and focusing on the future. The peer education happens when they stage an original, powerful stage production each year that educates young people about avoiding risky behaviors, dealing with stresses of adolescence and of urban life, and focusing on promising.
These stage productions reach more than 2,000 urban youth from more than 25 schools.
These representations of challenges faced by urban youth dealing with incarcerated parents, substance use in the home, and depression are widely regarded as affirming and ultimately uplifting.
Teachers, parents and community leaders laud this approach as especially effective. The plays strike a chord of realism that show young people that change and hope are possible.
Rounding out school year programming are transformative summer experiences including “YouthQuake, a 1-week youth summit that includes intensive learning about social issues and participating in community service activities. This retreat is a rejuvenating experience that takes many of our youth outside the city for the first time in their lives.
Teen HYPE’s Peer Education program is staffed with top-notch professionals from education, health and performing arts backgrounds, and costs $200,000 to run. We receive partial support from ticket sales and from grants, but still fall $120,000 short of our total goal for 2019.
